Price around the results

Q2 profit fell despite higher revenue

Vedanta Aluminium's consolidated revenue rose +4.35% QoQ, but operating profit declined -1.80% and net profit fell -6.21% to Rs 6,187.49 cr. The squeeze came as expenses increased +10.06%, more than twice the pace of revenue growth. Lower interest expense, down -9.02%, and a 0.19 percentage-point reduction in the tax rate partly cushioned the decline.

Cost growth drove the margin contraction

Operating margin narrowed 2.84 percentage points QoQ to 45.30% because expenses grew faster than revenue. Other income turned negative at -Rs 137.76 cr and represented -1.67% of pre-tax profit, making earnings quality weaker rather than providing support. The company said the war could add $50-$100 per tonne to hot-metal costs in H1 FY27.

Margin remains well above the commodities peer median

The 45.30% operating margin was 30.72 percentage points above the 14.58% median among 32 commodities peers that had reported the quarter. The available quarter-on-quarter comparison shows margin moving down from 48.14%, alongside a decline in pre-tax profit of -6.45% and EPS of -8.20%.

Management also said BALCO had begun commissioning its 435 KTPA smelter expansion.
