United Breweries' margin rebounds, but revenue remains 53.18% below last year

Sequential margin improved as costs fell, though a higher tax rate and increased interest expense limited the conversion from operating profit to net profit.

Price around the results

Margin recovery masks a steep year-on-year revenue decline

United Breweries reported consolidated revenue of Rs 2,072.72 cr in Q3FY26, up 0.97% sequentially but down 53.18% year on year. On the reported year-on-year comparison, operating profit rose 59.56% because expenses declined 56.90%, faster than revenue. Operating margin therefore improved 7.69 percentage points from Q3FY25 and 4.57 percentage points from Q2FY26.

Lower costs helped, while tax and interest absorbed gains

The sequential margin improvement came with expenses falling 3.96% despite 0.97% revenue growth. Interest expense rose 15.09% sequentially, while the tax rate increased 9.09 percentage points to 38.66%, limiting the benefit of the operating recovery.

Profit quality was not supported by other income

Other income was negative and represented -5.78% of pre-tax profit, so it did not lift reported earnings. The higher tax rate was another drag: net profit rose 75.12% sequentially, below the 74.08% increase in operating profit only after higher interest, depreciation and tax were absorbed. Operating margin has recovered from 3.20% in Q3FY25 through 8.04%, 10.85%, 6.32% and now 10.89% across the subsequent quarters, showing a rebound rather than a straight-line trend.

Management is targeting premiumisation and margin improvement

Management said increasing the share of premium products and building category growth remain key priorities, and the company launched Kingfisher Smooth. It also said revenue management and cost initiatives would support margin improvement while it continues investing in brands and capabilities. United Breweries' 10.89% operating margin was 5.33 percentage points below the 16.22% median for 27 Fast Moving Consumer Goods peers that had reported the quarter, placing it seventh from the bottom.

Results-day move was ordinary against the stock's history

The stock gained 0.48% on the results day, after opening with a 2.18% gap, and traded 0.31% lower by the fifth session. Across the past eight results, it rose after five and fell after three, with a median absolute move of 0.93%; the initial close-to-close reaction was therefore within its usual range.
