Price around the results

Q4 recovery lifts operating profit from the Q3 trough

Consolidated revenue rose 50.41% sequentially, while operating profit increased 1,180.89%, reversing the prior quarter's operating loss. Management said volumes and revenue increased significantly as operations recovered and production returned to normal after the cyber incident. Year on year, however, revenue fell 11.76% and operating profit declined 33.05%.

Margin recovery still leaves a year-on-year gap

Sequentially, expenses grew 36.05%, slower than revenue, lifting operating margin by 9.43 percentage points. Against Q4FY25, expenses fell 8.27% but revenue fell faster, so margin narrowed 3.39 percentage points. The 10.68% margin was also 4.13 percentage points below the 14.81% median for 93 reported Consumer Discretionary peers.

Profit benefited from other income and a lower tax rate

Other income made up 25.79% of pre-tax profit, making the reported profit less representative of operating earnings. The tax rate fell 6.41 percentage points year on year and 7.19 percentage points sequentially, which supported net profit despite the operating decline versus last year. Interest expense fell 28.72% year on year but rose 12.46% sequentially.

Management points to capacity, cost actions and ongoing pressure points

Management said Tata Passenger and Electric Vehicles would focus on capacity expansion for new launches, network expansion and structural cost actions, improved mix and operating leverage. The company said Q4 operations normalised after the cyber incident, while also flagging China challenges, incremental US tariffs and higher VME as profitability pressures. For JLR, management said full-year adjusted EBIT margin was 0.7%, within its 0.0% to 2.0% guidance range, and highlighted £1.7bn of planned Enterprise Missions savings to reduce break-even volumes towards 300k in two years.

The market reaction was unusual for this stock

The stock gained 5.25% on the first trading day after the results, with a 6.47 times volume ratio and a 7.26% gain after five trading days. That response was notably stronger than the stock's recent pattern: seven of the past eight result reactions were down, and the median absolute move was 3.16%. A corporate action overlapped with the reaction period.
