Price around the results

Margin recovery extends from the Q4FY26 trough

Consolidated revenue grew 18.48% YoY, ahead of the 17.35% increase in expenses, lifting operating margin by 0.96 percentage points. Sequentially, revenue and expenses both declined 22.50%, but expenses fell marginally faster, allowing margin to improve by 0.06 percentage points. Operating margin has now recovered from -0.06% in Q4FY26 to 1.11% in Q1FY27 and 1.17% in Q2FY27.

Interest costs rose, while tax provided sequential support

Interest expense increased 43.42% YoY, limiting the benefit of the operating improvement. Other income was not a major profit driver at 3.79% of pre-tax profit. The sequential tax-rate decline of 6.44 percentage points supported net profit, although the tax rate was 1.60 percentage points higher than a year earlier.

Peer gap remains wide despite the recovery

MFSL's 1.17% operating margin was 59.40 percentage points below the 60.57% median for 34 Financial Services peers that reported the quarter. That placed the company third from the bottom of the peer set. The current margin is therefore an improvement from the recent trough, but not a broad sector-level recovery.

Management points to renewal and protection momentum

Management said renewal premium grew 18% in H1 FY27, helped by the highest persistency across later cohorts, while retail protection and health APE grew 27% to Rs 685 crore. The company also said Axis Max Life onboarded 15 new partners during the first half and launched Smart Retirement Income to expand its retirement proposition. Management targets 92.5% digital penetration and a 31% gender-diversity ratio by FY27.
