Price around the results
Other income offset a sharp revenue decline
Consolidated revenue fell -13.59% YoY to Rs 883.27 cr, while operating profit declined -20.35% as expenses fell only -12.34%. Net profit nevertheless rose +15.94% to Rs 125.71 cr, because other income increased +2306.81% YoY to Rs 67.15 cr. That income accounted for 39.57% of pre-tax profit, making the earnings increase less reflective of operating performance.
Costs kept pressure on the operating margin
Sequentially, revenue fell -2.69% while expenses declined only -1.95%, so operating margin narrowed 0.65 percentage points to 14.37%. Interest expense rose +72.69% YoY and +50.88% QoQ, adding to the pressure below the operating line. The YoY tax-rate increase of 4.72 percentage points also limited the conversion of pre-tax profit into net profit.
Margin recovered from Q2 but remains below the peer median
Operating margin fell from 15.89% in Q3FY25 to 13.26% in Q2FY26, recovered to 15.02% in Q3FY26, and then eased to 14.37% in Q4FY26. The margin was 0.44 percentage points below the 14.81% median among 93 Consumer Discretionary peers that had reported. The latest quarter therefore marks a sequential setback after the Q3 recovery, rather than a continuation of the earlier decline.
Management pointed to volume recovery and expansion plans
Management said volume growth rebounded despite competitive pressure, while premium products continued to gain traction and retail and semi-urban markets grew faster. The company also said it faced pressure in the mid-market auto and specialty coatings segments. For the next phase, management said it plans geographic expansion to 6,000 towns by next year, a wider product range, and reinvestment of royalty savings in painter engagement and brand initiatives.
The initial market reaction was weaker than its usual direction
The stock fell -1.98% on the first trading day after the results and was down -2.71% by the fifth trading day. That contrasts with the stock's reaction history, where six of eight result-day moves were positive and the median absolute move was 1.4%. The first-day decline was therefore both contrary to its usual direction and larger than its typical move.
