Price around the results
Revenue held up, but operating profit weakened
CIE Automotive India reported consolidated revenue growth of 10.62% year on year, but operating profit declined 10.45%, showing that the additional sales did not translate into operating earnings. Sequentially, revenue was almost flat at +0.33%, while operating profit fell 35.51%. Net profit still increased 15.77% year on year to Rs 235.62 cr.
Costs drove the 4.75-point sequential margin fall
Expenses grew 13.11% year on year against 10.62% revenue growth, and rose 5.83% sequentially against revenue growth of 0.33%; this pushed operating margin down 2.01 percentage points year on year and 4.75 percentage points sequentially. Interest expense also increased 516.36% year on year and 10.78% sequentially. Other income accounted for 9.21% of pre-tax profit, while the year-on-year tax-rate change was limited to a 0.17-percentage-point decline, so the net-profit increase was not mainly a tax-rate benefit.
Margin remains volatile and below the peer median
The 8.55% operating margin was below 9.56% in Q3FY26 and 13.30% in Q4FY26, reversing the previous quarter's recovery rather than marking a third straight decline. It was 7.59 percentage points below the 16.14% median for the 22 Consumer Discretionary peers that had reported, placing CIE India eighth from the bottom.
Management points to restructuring, regional pressure and investment
Management said restructuring actions taken in the previous year had supported margin improvement, while also saying India's margin was slightly affected by cost inflation linked to the war in West Asia. The presentation said Europe revenue fell 3% in euro terms because of weak automotive-market conditions, and European light-vehicle volumes declined 1.2% year on year in H1 CY2026. The company reported INR 2,446.61 million spent on property, plant and equipment, capital work-in-progress and intangible assets.
The market reaction was far outside its usual range
The stock fell 11.32% on 23 July, with a 12.49% decline by the next trading day and a 10.79% relative fall at the first close. That compares with a 2.17% median absolute move after the last eight results, during which the stock rose three times and fell five times. The first-day volume was 32.55 times the reference level.
