Price around the results

Revenue growth did not convert fully into profit

Castrol India's standalone revenue grew 8.67% year on year, while operating profit rose 7.14% and net profit rose 3.74%. Expenses increased 9.09%, outpacing revenue and limiting operating-profit conversion. Sequentially, revenue increased 7.31%, but operating profit fell 10.47%.

Sequential margin reversal was the main weakness

Operating margin narrowed 4.24 percentage points sequentially because expenses grew 13.42%, nearly twice the 7.31% revenue growth. The year-on-year margin decline was smaller at 0.30 percentage points, while depreciation rose 12.71% and interest expense fell 19.74%. Other income contributed 7.22% of pre-tax profit, so reported earnings also had a material non-operating component; its year-on-year decline was 27.61%.

Q4 interrupted a three-quarter margin improvement

The margin had risen from 21.61% in Q4FY25 to 23.35% in Q1FY26, 23.69% in Q2FY26 and 25.55% in Q3FY26 before falling to 21.31% in Q4FY26. Despite the sequential setback, Castrol India's margin was 6.72 percentage points above the 14.59% median for the 15 Energy peers that had reported.
