Price around the results

Q4 margin recovery did not reach net profit

ABDL's consolidated revenue grew +9.37% YoY to Rs 1,006.89 cr, while operating profit rose +24.43%, showing better operating conversion than the topline. That improvement was offset below the operating line: interest rose +80.02% YoY and depreciation increased +80.93%, leaving pre-tax profit down -3.18%. The tax rate then rose 37.53 percentage points to 63.31%, driving the -52.14% net-profit decline.

Lower costs lifted margin, but profit quality weakened

Sequentially, revenue was almost flat at +0.39%, but expenses fell -3.40%, expanding operating margin by 3.27 percentage points. Interest expense nevertheless increased +95.49% qoq, while other income contributed 12.95% of pre-tax profit. The combination of higher financing costs, a larger depreciation charge and the elevated tax rate made the operating improvement less visible in earnings per share.

Margin reached the peer median after three quarterly gains

Operating margin has risen for three consecutive quarters, from 12.09% in Q1FY26 to 16.80% in Q4FY26, after falling from 14.76% in Q4FY25 to 12.09% in Q1FY26. Q4FY26's margin was 0.05 percentage points above the 16.75% median for the 26 Fast Moving Consumer Goods peers that had reported. YoY, revenue grew faster than expenses, at +9.37% versus +6.76%, supporting the 2.04 percentage-point margin expansion.

Management linked momentum to premium brands and Telangana

Management said the Prestige & Above portfolio gained volume and value momentum across regions, while normalisation of stocking norms in Telangana supported sequential growth in Mass Premium & Others. It also said policy-driven price changes in Maharashtra continued to outweigh industry offtake, and that further uplift is expected after Telangana's policy is finalised and the expected price revision occurs. For the longer term, management said Phase I and II projects are expected to add about 300 basis points to EBITDA margins by FY28 and another 100 basis points by FY29.

The early market response was weaker than ABDL's usual reaction

The stock's first-day return was +0.68%, but it was down -4.35% after one session and -2.77% after five sessions; the 15-session return was +2.91%. The five-day decline was larger than the stock's 1.35% median absolute move after its last eight results, although the historical direction was evenly split between four rises and four falls. The result-day data also shows a -2.47% opening gap and a 2.14 times volume ratio.
