Key takeaways

  • Q4FY26 operating margin rose 1.75 percentage points year on year to 15.54% as expenses grew slower than revenue.
  • Net profit grew 43.32% year on year, helped by a tax benefit that took the tax rate to -23.62%.
  • The stock fell 4.89% on the first trading day after results, versus a 1.84% median absolute move after the last eight results.

Price around the results

Margin improved despite sequential revenue decline

Consolidated revenue fell 4.88% sequentially, but expenses fell faster at 6.73%, lifting operating margin by 1.68 percentage points to 15.54%. Year on year, revenue grew 13.17% while expenses rose 10.87%, producing a 1.75-percentage-point margin expansion. Management said Q4 volume growth covered all key products except MPDA.

Interest costs offset part of the operating gain

Interest expense rose 63.90% sequentially and 75.61% year on year, even as depreciation fell 1.98% sequentially. Management attributed higher finance costs to export-led working-capital growth and said they included a Rs 39 cr foreign-currency loan revaluation impact. Other income was only -0.82% of pre-tax profit, so it did not materially support earnings.

Tax benefit drove the sequential profit increase

Pre-tax profit fell 6.29% sequentially, but net profit rose 3.31% because the tax rate declined by 11.49 percentage points to -23.62%. Year on year, the tax-rate change was 15.37 percentage points, helping net profit grow 43.32% despite the sharp rise in interest expense. The tax benefit makes the reported profit increase less representative of operating improvement than the margin gain.

Margin reached a quarter high but remains below peers

Operating margin has risen from 12.58% in Q3FY25 to 15.54% in Q4FY26, with the latest quarter reversing the 0.01-percentage-point sequential dip in Q3FY26. Aarti Industries' margin was 3.23 percentage points below the 18.77% median for the 51 Commodities peers that had reported. Management said 70% of ideas from its cost-savings drive had been implemented and targets EBITDA of Rs 1,800-2,200 cr, Debt/EBITDA below 2.5x and ROCE above 15%.

Shares fell more than the usual post-results move

The stock declined 4.89% on the first trading day after the results and was down 8.69% five sessions later. That reaction was notably weaker than the company's typical post-results move: the median absolute move across the last eight results was 1.84%, with five declines and three gains. Management said PDA utilisation remains under pressure from US tariffs and Chinese competition, while NT and Ethylation utilisation is expected to improve in CY26.
